If ever there was a milestone moment in life, turning 50 has to be one of the most significant. It’s a time to celebrate what’s already been, but also to dream about what comes next. And what better way to do this than hosting a fabulous party for the people who have supported you over those years
The question is what kind of party it should be. A big London evening at a venue that makes a statement? A weekend in the Cotswolds with guests staying on a private estate? A formal dinner that moves from cocktails and canapés to dessert and all-night dancing?
Whatever the format, the best 50ths have one thing in common: they are a joyous celebration of five decades of family, friendship and fun. Here are a few formats worth thinking about.
London offers some of the most extraordinary private party venues anywhere in the world – and the right one sets the tone for the entire night. A reception in a dramatic entrance space, dinner in a room that guests will still be talking about years later, dancing until late. This is the format that suits a broad guest list and a host who wants the evening to feel truly special.
The party we hosted at London’s Banqueting House was exactly that. The venue was the perfect theatrical backdrop for the occasion: a room that stops people in their tracks the moment they walk in. Drinks in the undercroft, dinner under the Rubens ceiling, opera singers appearing unannounced between courses, dancing until late. It was the kind of evening guests talk about for years.

A marquee on a private estate, properly dressed and well-lit, can feel just as elegant but even more intimate, than many London venues – with the added pleasure of stepping outside into open countryside between courses. This format works particularly well for guests travelling from overseas, since you can build a full weekend around it: a party on Saturday, a brunch on Sunday morning before everyone heads home.
We did exactly this for a client’s black-tie 50th in the Cotswolds – 120 guests at a private home, a marquee lined in black with warm seasonal colours, seasonal greenery and hanging glass tealights, valet parking on arrival, a jazz band through dinner and a DJ until the early hours. The party did not end there – this was followed by brunch the following morning for a mostly international guest list for whom we had arranged accommodation at nearby boutique hotels. The client’s message afterwards: “We could not have imagined a better party.”

Not every 50th needs to be a single-evening affair. A weekend format – with informal activities on Saturday afternoon, the main party that evening, and something relaxed on Sunday – gives guests time to properly enjoy each other’s company. It works especially well on a private estate in the Cotswolds or the Home Counties, with accommodation nearby.
The weekend format is something that is requested by many of our international clients as it gives guests the time and space to properly relax and enjoy the experience. Whether that’s taking part in new countryside activities, private tours of the local area or sampling the cuisine of a celebrated British chef, we can build the weekend around your expectations.

The most important detail when planning any 50th birthday party is the person at the centre of it, which is why we design every party around their character, their vision, their guests.
With over 20 years planning private parties in London, the Cotswolds and beyond, Henry still personally oversees every party. This means his relationships, his judgement and his attention to detail are present throughout, from the first conversation to the last song.
Over those two decades, we have built a network of private venues, caterers, florists, entertainers and producers that most people simply cannot access on their own. We manage every detail, so that on the night, the person whose birthday it is – and whoever organised it – can simply be there and enjoy it, even if they’ve been planning it from overseas. Go to the About Us page to read more about our planning expertise and experience.
Whether you are organising your own 50th, planning one for someone close to you, or coordinating from overseas, talk to our team about what you have in mind. We’ll make sure it’s a party that does the milestone justice.
It depends on numbers, atmosphere and how private you want the evening to feel. Henry Bonas has access to some of London’s most exceptional private spaces – including rooms that do not appear on any public listing – and will always put together a shortlist based on your brief rather than pointing you at the obvious options. For inspiration, see our blog, The 10 Best Exclusive Party Venues in London.
Both work well but for different reasons. London is the natural choice for a single-evening party, particularly if most guests are already in the city. The Cotswolds is better suited to a multi-day format – especially if people are travelling from overseas and you want the occasion to feel like more than one night.
Six to twelve months gives you the best choice of venues and suppliers. If your timeline is tighter, it is always worth a conversation – we have pulled together exceptional parties at shorter notice before, and we will tell you honestly what is and is not possible.
Yes. We manage everything on your behalf – from initial consultation by video call to the party itself – and keep you closely informed throughout. The aim is that you arrive on the night feeling like a guest, not the person who has been running it.
Every party is entirely bespoke, so there is no single answer. We are always happy to talk through what you have in mind and be straightforward about where a budget will and will not go far – from the very first conversation.
